Oracle of Shadows & Light Review
Oracle of Shadows & Light
by Lucy Cavendish and Jasmine Becket-Griffith
45 Cards
These Oracle cards have a playful, teen-inspired vibe, featuring bobble-headed girls with a cutesy-ghoulish aesthetic. The deck’s tagline reads, “Wisdom for Mysfits, Mystics, Sisters, and Wanderers.”
While the artwork is beautifully crafted and quite captivating, the deck has one significant drawback: the missing guidebook. My deck arrived in a paper box, but the guide was absent. The QR code provided links to a Google Drive containing guides for various decks, but unfortunately, the one for this deck was missing. This makes a few of the cards difficult to interpret. After some searching, I was able to locate a copy of the guidebook on Scribd.
The cards have a dark, melancholic charm, yet maintain a cute aesthetic. Each card features a feminine, fairytale-like character with a creative title and a brief description, which serves as the source of spiritual guidance.
I’ve found that these cards resonate particularly well with younger individuals—they’re drawn to the deck and feel a connection that makes them feel understood. However, for older, more masculine clients, this deck may not be the best fit.
I truly appreciate the evocative imagery and thought-provoking titles and descriptions in this deck. However, there are moments that make me pause, like this card in particular:
“Sewer Mermaid: Your sensuality is beautiful!”
After reflecting on it for a moment, I grasped the meaning, which the guidebook confirmed: Despite negative self-perception or criticism from others, you are beautiful just as you are.
While I understand and value the message, the title still tends to evoke a bit of a side-eye reaction.
Overall, I really appreciate this deck. The creativity shines through in both the language and the visual art. In my opinion, it pairs perfectly as a clarifying deck alongside the Nicoletta Ciccoli Tarot!
